Ben Shenton, who served in the States from 2005 to 2011 has called for the States to introduce a deposit system for elections to deter fringe candidates from taking part.

The former Health Minister said any candidates who then failed to gain three per cent of the

vote would lose their deposit to charity.

A deposit scheme of £500 per candidate is currently used in the UK in elections to the House of Commons. The money is refunded if the candidate obtains five per cent of the votes cast.
