In a move that could provide a major boost for the sport’s local and international profile, four separate federations have combined to form the British Surfing Union of Recognised Federations.

And on Wednesday night it was announced that the sport would feature in the Tokyo Olympics in four years’ time, meaning that Jersey’s surfers – many of whom have already gained international recognition within the sport – could have the opportunity to compete in Japan.

The merger also comes alongside plans for the Channel Islands to be recognised by the International Surfing Association – a move that would see a CI team able to compete at International Surfing Association level in all surfing disciplines in the same way it does at the European Championships.
