Calls for curbs on zero-hour contracts

The Health and Social Security Panel have been reviewing the use of zero-hour contracts after claims that they were being abused by some employers.

And while the panel admitted that the controversial contracts had their benefits, particularly in the flexibility they allowed, they found they were being misused in some cases.

Among the legislative recommendations made by the panel were to introduce a way for the Social Security Department to refer a zero-hour contract to the Employment Tribunal to determine whether they are appropriate; and to abolish exclusivity clauses which mean an employee can only work for one company.

Read the recommendations in full in Monday’s JEP.
