The unreasonable application of the policy has been blamed for Unite the Union pulling out of major discussions about the modernisation of the public sector.
Nick Corbel, the union’s representative, has warned that it will not take part in those discussions until a more suitable approach for managing attendance can be found, however, the Chief Minister’s office has said Mr Corbel’s claims are ‘unsubstantiated’ and that it was unable to identify any cases relating to workers recovering from cancer to which he had referred.
Mr Corbel’s comments come after the JEP revealed that Health Department employees with at least three periods of absence due to sickness in six months could face dismissal unless their attendance improves under the States ‘managing attendance policy’, which was revised last year.
