The disorientated pair were left perplexed when they arrived in St Mary’s, a tiny island off Penzance, Cornwall, on Monday and began asking locals for directions to their accommodation in Jersey’s capital.

They eventually flagged down a local police sergeant who, after five minutes of conversation in broken English and ‘non-existent Chinese’, managed to convince them that they were a long way away from their intended destination.

Police sergeant Colin Taylor, who used to work for the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust as a pink pigeon expert in Mauritius, eventually tracked down some accommodation for the couple who enjoyed an unexpected two-night stay in St Mary’s Pelistry guesthouse.
