The First Secretary of the Embassy of the Republic of Belarus, Kiril Zentsov, spoke at the Slave Workers’ Memorial at Westmount before laying a wreath in memory of his fellow countrymen – PoWs and civilians – who were forced to work in appalling conditions to turn the Channel Islands into fortresses as part of Hitler’s Atlantic Wall defences.
Mr Zentsov was accompanied by the Naval Attaché from the Russian Embassy in the UK, Captain Igor Elkin, who also laid a wreath.
More than 150 people attended Monday’s ceremony in the grounds of the Crematorium where they gathered to remember all nationalties of forced and slave workers – Russians, Ukrainians, Belarusians, Spanish Republicans, French North African soldiers, French, Jews and Belgians.
