Earlier this week the Education Department announced that from September families with a combined household income of £75,000 or more will no longer be entitled to 20 hours per week of free care at private nurseries for their children in the year before they start school.

Currently all three-and four-year-olds, regardless of household income, are entitled to the free hours under the Nursery Education Fund if they choose to send their children to private companies instead of States nurseries.

Justin Donovan, the director of Education, told the JEP that ‘unfortunately the days of where we can provide free nursery to any family of any income are over’ and added he did not think the move would impact private nurseries.
