Small firms ‘should not bail out the States over benefits’

The JEP revealed on Tuesday that as part of a review of the Island’s welfare system, the Social Security Department is considering asking businesses to fund short-term sick pay and to provide contributory pension schemes for all employees.

Social Security Minister Susie Pinel said at a Scrutiny hearing that she hopes to ‘change the culture’ of Islanders relying on the States for certain types of welfare.

Jersey Chamber of Commerce president Kristina Le Feuvre said that small businesses in particular were already facing ‘immense pressure’, and she warned that their growth could be hampered if excessive legislation was imposed.
