‘Change St Helier site for community use, not flats’

Earlier this year plans were lodged to turn the dilapidated Le Seelleur joinery workshop in Oxford Road next to the Millennium Town Park, which was given to the States in 1996, into three apartments.

Jersey Property Holdings, who made the application, said that if the plans were approved, they would sell the site with planning permission and the proceeds would be given to the Health Department.

However, Deputy Sam Mézec has labelled the idea ‘barking mad’ and called for the site to be given to the parish so that the authorities can turn it into a centre that will benefit the community.

The Le Seelleur building, along with nine others, was bequeathed to the States following the death of builder Harold Ernest Le Seelleur. His will stated that the units, or the money generated from them, were to be used to help the ‘aged, infirm and needy residents of the Island’.
