Assistant Chief Minister Philip Ozouf, who has responsibility for the digital sector, has said the proposed changes ‘future proof’ the law and ensure those who choose to send abuse on any form of social media can be prosecuted – and he said that while much of the current legislation was largely fit for purpose, it was not designed for the digital era.
Judges will, if the proposals are approved, also have the power to order cyber-bullies, or trolls as they are otherwise known, to pay unlimited fines or subject them to strict restraining orders.
In an interview with the JEP, St Brelade Deputy Montfort Tadier has spoken out about the abuse he has suffered online, including how on one particular occasion a troll made reference to the deaths of his father and one of his brothers.
