The chairman of the Jersey Farmers Union, Graham Le Lay, lobbied for the amendment to the 2016 Budget, which was lodged by St Mary Deputy David Johnson, to exempt tractors with a top speed of 26 mph from the increase, saving the industry £38,800 a year.

The amendment was adopted by the Assembly on Tuesday by 23 votes to 17.

The models of tractors used by farmers in Jersey come in two maximum speed capacities of 26 and 33 miles per hour, and the industry did not dispute the proposed 22 per cent increase on the more power-ful vehicles in the interests of road safety.
