Deputy Geoff Southern has lodged a proposition with the States calling on the Treasury Minister to bring forward regulations for approval by the Assembly which would force Jersey Gas to reduce its prices.
Under the Jersey Gas Company (Jersey) Law 1989, the States can determine the tariffs set by the firm if it appears to be ‘necessary to do so in the public interest’.
The Deputy’s proposition comes after a review by the Channel Islands’ Competition and Regulatory Authorities found that there were no reasonable grounds to suspect that the Jersey gas market was breaching the Competition Law.
Following the publication of the report, Senator Philip Ozouf, who has responsibility for competition, said that the price of fuel in Jersey is to be investigated further because he did not believe the CICRA review would give consumers ‘comfort’.
