Tributes to popular father, police officer and sportsman

Paul McMurray (49) – who was put forward for a JEP Pride of Jersey Awards under the Inspirational Leader category –died last week at the Jersey Hospice after being diagnosed with cancer two years ago.

Chief police officer Mike Bowron said that despite his illness, Mr McMurray continued to teach kenpo karate to Islanders and was dedicated and committed to the development of the sport.

The police flag has been flying at half-mast since Mr McMurray’s death, and staff who were unable to attend his funeral paid their respects to him as the funeral cortège passed the headquarters yesterday.

Mr McMurray, who was married to Tracey and had two children, Cheyenne and Khiai, started his career with the States police in June 1999 as a systems administrator in rostering. However, his ambition was to become an officer, and in January 2007 he was successful with his application.

He was deployed with B Shift and more recently worked with the Joint Financial Crime Unit.

Neil Roberts, who nominated Mr McMurray for the Pride of Jersey Award as a result of his work with karate, said: ‘We are all grieving because we have lost the most humble and generous man. In my opinion God has truly gained a new angel in heaven. I know he will live on in the hearts of others for years to come.’
