Privileges and Procedures has welcomed a move from St Helier Constable Simon Crowcroft, who resigned as head of that panel earlier this year in protest at the States decision not to implement the result of April’s referendum on reform, to replace the Bailiff with an elected politician to act as speaker of the House.

In comments lodged with the Assembly, the committee supports the proposition, which was lodged just days after the current Bailiff, Sir Michael Birt, announced he was to retire in January 2015.
