Environment Minister Rob Duhamel has approved the Transport department’s planning application to create a specially-lined pit to store the waste at La Collette’s reclamation site.
The move follows years of inaction that saw both departments clash over the best way to deal with the potentially cancer-causing material and comes ahead of a vote of no confidence against Deputy Duhamel lodged largely in response to his handling of the asbestos.
