Many of Her Majesty’s representatives are remembered very fondly, but the recent announcement that General Sir Michael Wilkes, who was the incumbent at Government House from 1995 to 2000, had died at far too early an age will have reminded Islanders just how well he fulfilled his duties.

Those who had the pleasure of meeting him will also recall the light touch which he brought to a job which is more onerous than many would believe.

Sir Michael’s easy manner, his love of springing entertaining surprises on visiting dignitaries, and his manifest enthusiasm for Jersey life mean that he will be long remembered as the very model of a modern Lieutenant-Governor.
