The hole is believed to be a disused well, and is more than three metres deep, although staff were unaware of it until the ground started to open up.

The opening has made the hockey pitch at FB fields unusable and it will remain so until the hole is filled. One game has already had to be cancelled.

Head groundsman Ian Le Marquand discovered the hole when he arrived for work on Tuesday morning.
