The JEP was inundated with responses at the weekend after asking our Facebook followers for their views on how to turn around the Island’s flagging tourism industry.

About 120 people replied to our straw poll, which came after we reported that the number of leisure visitors to Jersey fell by 1.9 per cent last year to 688,300.

As a result, spending dropped by £11 million last year – a 4.4 per cent decline from 2011 adjusted for inflation – and has now slumped by £38 million in real terms over the past four years.

The majority of JEP Facebook followers who commented on the issue said that the key to improving the sector’s fortunes was for the States to push down prices of flights, accommodation, entertainment and amenities by lowering taxes and encourage investment in attractions.
