LibertyBus, the Island’s bus operator, has said it should be given ‘essential service’ status as an ongoing row with Unite, the union representing bus drivers, intensifies.

If the union agrees to the plan it would need to give 20 days’ notice before any industrial action rather than the usual seven.

Transport Minister Kevin Lewis backed the proposal, saying that it was important for bus users to get as much notice as possible if the bus service was unavailable for any reason.
