Is this the freedom I and others defended all those years ago?

FORGIVE me for revisiting a subject I have already raised, but the passing of another friend on the ‘Liverpool Pathway’ compels me to, particularly as we now learn that this is practised not only at the hospital, but also in Hospice and state-run homes.
I think it is much to the discredit of this once-wealthy Island that it can no longer afford to care for the elderly and so solve the problem of an ageing population and resort to geriatricide – make no mistake, that’s precisely what it is.
It brings to mind the final solution of a previous ministerial government – genocide, but in comparison the Nazis were humane, as death by cyanic gas is virtually instantaneous, whereas to deny an elderly patient food and especially water is death by excruciating torture.
‘Nil by mouth’ and ‘Do not resuscitate’ are instructions easily given and distance the issuer from those ‘faces in the night’, more’s the pity. Were it otherwise, there would be no need for this letter!
Furthermore, I believe that our dearly beloved States Members have not only brought shame on our Island by sanctioning this cruel procedure, made even worse by applauding the Health Minister’s announcement of it, but also, by their insistence on a pay rise, they have distanced themselves even further from the public they have sworn to represent.
If someone had shown me 70 years ago that this was the freedom I was setting off so gaily to defend, I don’t think I would have bothered.
