The Lost Kidz application, which is a special programme that can be downloaded onto mobile phones, was thought up by St Ouen resident Stephen Fern and designed by a team from St Helier-based web developers E-scape.
It works by sending out an alert to those in an area where a child has gone missing and aims to reduce the time a youngster is separated from their parents and, therefore, the risk of that child being harmed.
So far the app, which was formally approved by technology giant Apple on Friday, has received the backing of the respected charity, the American Humane Association, which is due to launch it across the US. Media organisations such as News International and the Guardian are considering promoting it.
