Education Minister Pat Ryan has said that by paying five years’ worth of grants to St George’s School up front as a lump sum, the school has been able to buy its premises.
He says that the move has ensured its long-term future without any additional cost to the States – the annual grant to St George’s, which was this year £204,000, will now end, instead of being slowly phased out over five years. The school currently caters for 180 pupils.
The annual grant to St Michael’s Preparatory School – which currently receives around £410,000 per year – will be phased out by 2016. In a statement to the States, the minister emphasised that there was no extra money going to St George’s.
