Deputy calls for tax on landowners

On the eve of a major rezoning debate that will set planning policy for the next decade, the Deputy said that landowners see their sites increase in value by up to 200 times when they are rezoned, and that the States need to claim a chunk of the unearned windfall.

In 2009 both Treasury Minister Philip Ozouf and Environment Minister Freddie Cohen appeared to give cautious support to the idea of a development tax – but nothing has been done about it since.
