Island Games: Sailing

With 13 Island Games between them are Laser Radial sailor David Speller and Laser Standard competitor Martin Speller.

However, their compatriots Charlie Perkins and Laurence Carter will be making their debut with Laurence being the youngest ever Jersey sailor, at 15 years old.

Jersey team

Simon Le Huray (46): Marketing manager, Jersey Tourism. Team manager going to second Games. Hopes for a team medal, given the right conditions, and one of the young guns getting in the medals.

Did you know? Simon is vice commodore at St Catherine’s Sailing Club.

Sporting idol: Lance Armstrong.

Charlie ‘Chaz’ Perkins (18 but 19 at Games): Former Victoria College student on a gap year before starting at Barts and the London Medical School in September. Making his Games debut in the Laser Standard and hopes for a top ten finish. Has represented Jersey four times in the Jeux des Iles.

Sporting idol: Ben Ainslie.

Martin Speller (51): Head of the operations division at Deutsche Bank. Laser Standard sailor going to his eighth Games. Has won three team medals and hopes to enjoy the week and aim for a podium position.

Did you know? Martin made his Games debut in Gibraltar 1995.

Sporting idol: Ben Ainslie.

Laurence Carter (15): Victoria College student. Laser Radial sailor making his Island Games debut. On the Optimist National squad, Youth Multihull squad and previously finished fourth in the Youth Nationals.

Did you know? Laurence plays guitar.

Sporting idol: Ben Ainslie.

David Carter (53): Chartered engineer. Laser Radial sailor. 2002 UK Laser club champion, going to his seventh Games and hoping to add to his medal tally of individual silver plus team gold, silver and bronze.

Did you know? Although David has sailed all his life, he didn’t start sailing a Laser until he was 40.

Sporting idol: Eric Cantona.
