Signs of seasonal generosity

Part of Santa’s mission is, of course, to delight younger members of the community, but he has another duty – to collect as much money as possible for the Jersey Joint Charities Christmas Appeal.
Santa’s visit to Jersey is, as usual, organised by Round Table members, but they are anything but alone as the annual drive to collect funds for the least well off in Island society builds up momentum. For example, between 10 am and 4 pm yesterday staff at Channel 103, aided by some 30 volunteers, received and processed bids for lots in the Christmas Appeal auction.
The auction, which featured 172 lots donated by businesses and individuals, raised just under £40,000. This was an impressive total by any standards and is a tribute to the organisational abilities of the radio station’s managers, presenters and their team. It also says a great deal about the willingness of Islanders to support worthwhile causes.
There were fears that this year’s auction would be hit hard by the effects of the recession – both in terms of lots donated and bids. In the event, although slightly less was raised than last year, a major contribution was successfully made to the appeal fund.
Some of those who won lots – paying substantial sums for the privilege – demonstrated further generosity by giving them away. A notable case was the bidder who pledged to pay £700 for a dinner for 15 people at Hotel L’Horizon and then promised that the dinner guests would be staff from Jersey Hospice Care.
Those who missed the auction or any other chances to donate will still come across plenty of opportunities to make the Christmas Appeal a success.
Collection buckets, rattled either by Santa’s helpers or volunteers braving the cold on the streets of St Helier, will not be hard to find, so please give generously. Economic conditions beyond any individual’s control mean that times are harder than ever in this festive season for too many members of this generally prosperous community.
