The organisation which manages historic sites across the Island has been forced to lay off staff and undergo a huge restructuring programme, after admitting that it was facing a financial crisis.
But it is still facing a shortfall and is also in desperate need of further cash to refurbish its sites.
Education Minister James Reed has now lodged a proposition calling for the annual States grant to be increased, from £2.1 million to £2.3 million, and for up to £465,000 to be made available each year for site refurbishment. In return, the trust would have to agree to minimum opening times for its sites. The proposition will be debated on 19 July.
Jersey Heritage’s problems were revealed in a report issued last autumn by the Comptroller and Auditor General, Chris Swinson, who said that the trust had made a loss every year since 2003 and had spent £800,000 into its overdraft.
