Michael Birt said that since becoming Bailiff he was having to spend more time in the States, but that this had not affected the judicial process.

He made the comments while giving evidence to an inquiry into the roles of the Island’s most senior Law Officers, which is being carried out by a panel headed by Lord Carswell, the former Lord Chief Justice of Northern Ireland.

Mr Birt, whose main role is to preside over the Royal Court and the States and be the Court of Appeal president, said that the States was sitting more frequently which meant that more of his time was taken up with this side of the job. However, he said that this had not affected the judicial process.
