Firstwoman home was the CCC’s Kim Ashton while in the men’s competition, and after a sprint finish, Ocean Tide’s Adam Wojtkiewicz and Velo Sport Jersey’s Nick Le Cocq finished fourth and fifth respectively.

In truth Spence won the event comfortably, having launched a successful attack as he broke away from the bunch on the penultimate climb of Mont Cambrai.

Only Ovenden was able to keep close to him as he jumped onto his clubmate’s wheel and the two, working together as a pair, then stayed clear of the rest for the last lap of the race.

Spence was never in any danger of losing his lead, however, and he finished a good five seconds ahead.
