JERSEY’S biggest ever professional boxing promotion resulted in a tremendous points victory for Sheffield light-heavyweight Clinton Woods over the USA’s Elvir Muriqi last night.

A packed house at the Hotel de France roared Woods to a clear points victory in this IBF world title eliminator, a victory that should result in him challenging for the title he lost after reigning for three years.

At Friday night’s official weigh-in at the Royal Yacht Hotel’s Drift Bar, Woods had stepped out to chants of ‘Clin-ton Woods! Clin-ton Woods!’ as Kosovan challenger Elvir Muriqi revelled in boos from a lively crowd.

Woods, a regular visitor to Jersey, had, as expected, slipped comfortably into the role of local hero and was looking forward to the lion’s share of support.
