A FATHER whose son has contracted leukaemia has started a fund-raising drive to support cancer charities helping his 14-year-old boy.
Builder Robert Haycock wants to help raise money for the CLIC Sargent charity, which is allowing his son Calvin to stay at its home-from-home close to Southampton Hospital. The De La Salle College pupil, an Island football team goalkeeper, contracted leukaemia last September.
He will need to make regular trips to Southampton for chemotherapy and will be staying with family members at the Clic Haven home free of charge during his visits. As a result, Mr Haycock is determined to do what he can to support the charity and has arranged a fund-raising night next month that will include a silent auction.
Among the lots that will be on offer is an England football shirt signed by Ray Wilson, one of the famous team of 1966 that won the World Cup at Wembley. There will also be an Everton shirt signed by the World Cup winner up for grabs, as the left back played for the Merseysiders. Other lots include a day return trip to Guernsey in a 30-ft cabin cruiser for four people and a plane trip around the Island, also for four.
Mr Haycock said he was determined to do all he could to help CLIC Sargent because of the work he now knows the charity does. The fund-raising event at the Town House in New Street will feature a disco and karaoke as well as a buffet and will take place on Saturday 28 February. Anyone who wants tickets for the fund-raising events should contact Mr Haycock on 07797 729458 or by e-mail to bobhaycock@jerseymail.co.uk.
