HOME owners buying houses not connected to main drains could pay an extra £50,000 on top of their mortgage, a property owner has warned.

Alan Ross, who lives in a four-bedroom house on Westmount Road, currently pays £200 a month for a tanker to empty his tight tank and he has warned future buyers to avoid similar properties and called on the States to prevent more being built in the future.

‘When I bought the house, I was aware that it was a tight tank but was not aware that all of our ”grey water” would have to go into it,’ he said. ‘It was a bit of a shock to find out how much it would cost each year and I have worked out that I could have spent £50,000 more on a more expensive property instead.’

Deputy Jacqui Huet, who mentioned the matter at a recent hustings meeting and is also Assistant Minister of Transport and Technical Services, has now asked Planning Minister Senator Freddie Cohen to ensure that lawyers warn their clients of the potential costs when buying houses with tight tanks.
