ONE of the dominant political figures in Jersey’s modern history, former Senator John Le Marquand, has died at the age of 96.

Tributes were paid in the States this morning to Mr Le Marquand, who is best remembered as the founding father of the Island’s education system.

First elected as a member of the 1948 intake of politicians who rebuilt Jersey’s fortunes after the Liberation, Mr Le Marquand went on to serve as a Deputy and Senator for 39 years until 1987.

After presiding over Education from 1951 until 1969, during which time new schools including Hautlieu were established to provide educational opportunities for all, he went on to lead Public Health and oversee the modernisation of health and hospital services.
