A PROPOSED new duty free shop at the Airport for arriving passengers may be scrapped in the face of strong opposition.
It has emerged that concerns raised by the Island’s Medical Officer of Health Dr Rosemary Geller over the threat to Islanders’ health by allowing the purchase of cheap alcohol and cigarettes on incoming flights may lead to the plans being shelved.
Assistant Economic Development Minister Alan Maclean said that ‘more work needed to be done’ on the proposal to introduce a new incoming duty free outlet.
He said that the idea was put forward to gain much-needed revenue for the Airport but ‘not to the detriment of the wider community’.
He said that Dr Geller was among those who had raised her concerns and added that there ‘appeared to be significant opposition to the move’.
