REQUESTS to grant housing qualifications to some families made homeless by the Broadlands fire disaster have been refused.

Housing Minister Terry Le Main said that he could not set a precedent by giving housing qualifications to those who lost all their possessions and homes in the blaze in St Peter last month.

Now the unqualified foreign workers, who are mainly from Madeira and Poland, have been warned that they have until the end of the summer to find a new home.

From France, where he is on holiday, Senator Le Main said: ‘We will be sympathetic to these people and we have assessed their suitability for getting housing qualifications. Three families were considered by my Assistant Minister, but in consultation with the Population Office and me there just was no case to by-pass normal policy by granting a hardship consent without setting a precedent.
