THE campaign to get more Islanders to the polls on election day has begun.
The £30,000 campaign to encourage Islanders to register for the vote and then get to the polling stations is being carried out by the Privileges and Procedures Committee and advertising agency The Idea Works.
Posters are going up, the www.vote.je website will be revived, adverts are being placed on the back of buses, a leaflet will go to every household, a travelling registration tent will tour the Island and, for the first time, a registration form will be sent to every address in the Island. Privileges vice-chairman Juliette Gallichan, the Deputy for St Mary (pictured), said that the campaign would be split into three stages to raise awareness, encourage registration and remind Islanders to vote.
At the 2005 elections just 23,157 out of 88,200 Islanders cast a vote in the Senatorial poll – just over one in four of the total population. The campaign to increase the turn-out follows previous efforts in 2005 which resulted in another 2,000 voters going to the polls.
