THE Constable of St Helier, Simon Crowcroft, may be about to join the running for Chief Minister.
The three-term Constable, who was first elected as a St Helier No 2 Deputy in 1996, is considering standing in the Senatorial election and running against Treasury Minister Terry Le Sueur for the top job.
Chief Minister Frank Walker is due to stand down at the end of the year, and so far Senator Le Sueur is the only declared candidate to replace him. Mr Crowcroft (50) took a swipe at Senator Le Sueur — who, like Senator Walker in 2005, will not face an election before running as Chief Minister — by saying that the head of the Council of Ministers should have the backing of the Island in a fresh mandate.
The Constable has, both publicly and privately, denied that he would be a candidate for the top job, but he now says that recent approaches have made him think again. He said: ‘Since saying publicly that I intended to carry on as Constable I have been approached by many local people from all walks of life who think that I should reconsider.
