THE Bailiff has defended the references to the international media coverage of the Haut de la Garenne inquiry in Liberation Day speeches made by himself and Chief Minister Frank Walker.
Sir Philip Bailhache and Senator Walker were criticised by Deputy Gerard Baudains for politicising the event by referring to the ‘remorseless denigration of Jersey’ by the media in their speeches.
In a response to Deputy Baudains, copied to all States Members and released to the JEP, Sir Philip wrote that the situation was different to Senator Stuart Syvret’s Christmas greetings speech, which he stopped by suspending the sitting.
Senator Syvret had criticised States Members and civil servants for alleged past failures.
