According to the Team Bath website England’s opening win against Northern Ireland, 52-32, was ‘built on the midcourt partnership of Jo Binns, Sara Bayman and Guthrie’.

And reports on the Daily Express website cites Guthrie as having given an ‘impressive defensive performance’.

England, made up of members of the Open and under-21 squads, went on to beat Wales 57-23 and then Scotland 55-31 to secure the title in Glasgow.

‘It was my first Open and it went really well – we won overall and I played well,’ said Guthrie.

‘We were playing good netball as a team and trying different structures like working on turning the ball over so it was good experience.

‘I wasn’t involved in this last year but apparently all the teams have improved since then so none of the games were easy -we just kept pushing on until the final whistle.’

Guthrie’s Team Bath had seven players involved in the Open but return to Superleague action on Saturday when they take on Leeds Carnegie away from home.

The former Le Rocquier student may be edging her way to a senior England cap just at the right time as Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, is pushing for netball to be a demonstration sport at the 2012 London Olympics.

‘How exciting,’ said JNA president Jackie Nelson, on hearing the Prime Minister’s plan which he hopes will encourage more women and girls into the sport.

‘It’s so good for the sport to be recognised like that as so many people enjoy it and enjoy watching it on Sky.

‘Serena is hitting England netball just at the right time as this would be a great step forward – hopefully this will be the breakthrough needed for people to recognise what an exciting sport it is.’
