And over 500 morning-after pills were given to teenage girls aged 16 and under by Brook Jersey in 2007.

Figures released to the JEP reveal that 1,350 emergency contraceptives were handed out by the charity to girls aged between 12 and 25, although the number of children aged under 12 was very few.

The morning-after pill can be taken up to three days after sex but prevents more than nine out of ten pregnancies if taken within 24 hours.

Last year’s figure is slightly higher than the previous year’s number, which stood at 1,210.
