JT sale debate put off again

Treasury Minister Terry Le Sueur has confirmed that he will ask for a postponement of his proposal to sell the States-owned utility company to an international telecoms business.

Politicians were due to hear the arguments on 15 January, but the situation changed somewhat last week when Economic Development Minister Philip Ozouf told a scrutiny panel that he would be intent on splitting up Jersey Telecom into parts in future whether or not the States decide to back the sale.

Senator Ozouf wants to ensure fair competition on a level playing field for all phone companies so that they have the same access to the phone network.

As a result, he is expected to ask the Island’s competition regulator to assess the options that would allow operators equal access to the network in future.
