In a thrilling Air Rifle Olympic final, David Turner overcame a seven point deficit to take gold with 672.10, beating Wales’ Martin Blake (670.20).

Andrew De La Haye tied with GB number one Tim James of England in the Olympic Skeet Clay but lost gold on count-back.

Mary Norman won the Ladies’ Air Pistol with a clear victory scoring 460.2.

Mike Quenault won silver in the Men’s Air Pistol event scoring 650.60 and Dave Ward took bronze on 640.50.

Quenault also took silver in the Centre Fire Pistol, finishing three points behind the leader with 561.

Ward took silver in the Standard Pistol with 544 and Bob Carroll took bronze on 530.

Colin Mallett won silver in the Fullbore Rifle with 402.51 and David Le Quesne picked up fourth with 399.56.

Bedford aims high John Bedford was High Gun in yesterday’s Crabbé Clay Pigeon Club’s 50 Bird Sporting with 42 ex 50.

Brian Bourne won Class A with 38; Howard won Class B with 41; Tom Richardson won Class C with 36 and Sid Clements was top veteran with 26.

Le Sech top gun Ashley Le Sech was High Gun and winner of Class AA in Lecq Clay Target Club’s 50 Bird Sporting yesterday with 43 ex 50.

SQUASH – Alternative defeat: Jersey lost 3-2 to Wales yesterday in the Alternative Island Games squash event in Guernsey.

Kate Cadigan and Paul Franklin recorded Jersey’s wins with 3-1 victories over their respective opponents.

Ross Cornish went down 3-1 and Rob Hickling and Rowena Hockey were both beaten 3-0.

ISLAND CHALLENGE – Halksworth and Nicol win: Daniel Halksworth and Marc Nicol won the Island Challenge yesterday.

Competing in pairs over the kayak, bike and run course they placed top of the 50, mostly UK teams.

Jersey’s Nick Le Cocq and Matt Gambles along with Jason Hosty and Doc Snook also completed the race.

GOLF – Gibaut wins McKenzie: Terry Gibaut, 20 handicap, won the La Moye Golf Club McKenzie Cup Stableford on Saturday with 40 points (div III sweep winner).

Peter Garnier, 5 hcp, was second on 39 (div I sweep winner) and Bob Wickings, 4 hcp, took third on 38.

W Lennox, 9 hcp, was top junior on 33.

Goldsmith shines: Dave Goldsmith, 24 hcp, won the White Horse Open at St Clement’s on Saturday with 42 points.

John Guthrie, 18 hcp, was second with 41, and Giovanni Seva along with Peter Van Der Niet, both 11 hcp, followed with 41 pts.

Modern success: Ian Dodds, 13 hcp, won the St Clement’s Golf Club Modern Hotels Stableford yesterday with the highest Stableford points of the year, 42.

John A Hughes, 14 hcp, was second on 41.

King conquers: Paul King won the Demi Golf Society’s Dunes Hotel Cup on Saturday at St Clement following a net 59 off 12 handicap.

Joe Straiton was second with a net 63 off ten handicap.

Wallser wins again: Tony Wallser won St Peter Golf Society’s September Order of Merit competition at Les Ormes at the weekend with 21 Stableford points off eleven handicap.

Runner-up was Society secretary Nigel Johnson.

CYCLING – CCC dominate: The top six places went to Caesarean Cycling Club members in the annual Jersey Cyling Association’s five mile time trial yesterday with Alistair Cann securing the win in 10.35 min.

James Amy was second in 10.48 min at the Five Mile Road course and Adam Wojtkiewicz took third in 11.18 min.

HOCKEY – Heelis double: The Investec Jersey Women’s Hockey Association League recommenced yesterday at Les Quennevais with RWB opening the defence of their title with a 5-1 win against Jersey Ladies.

For the winners, Sarah Heelis bagged a brace and Nina Driscoll, Carla Critchlow and Jennifer Brankin singles.

SAILING – Champion Carter: Island Games sailor Lydia Carter won St Catherine’s Sailing Club’s annual club championship over the weekend at St Catherine.

Carter pushed Dave Williams into second place after two firsts and a third place in the three-race series.

PETANQUE – Doubles winners: Pru Vibert and Mick Rondel topped the leaderboard in the Jersey Pétanque Club’s final event of the season, the PBS Club Doubles, contested at Les Quennevais yesterday.

Beaten finalists were Rita Le Brocq and Keaven Taylor.
