The Leonis lad goes in the Class B final (64 kilos, under-20 bouts) against Craig Callaghan of Sefton, Liverpool, in the Navy gymnasium HMS Nelson, in Portsmouth.
Both Dave Thompson, the Leonis club’s head coach, and Tony Burt will be in Powell’s corner as he attempts to finish his campaign with a flourish.
Said Thompson: ‘Ryan is in very good condition and if we get him in the right frame of mind he can do well.
We know Callaghan is a tall, mobile lad who is well skilled in the computer-scoring bouts, but if Ryan avoids being caught early on he can do it.
‘Looking at Ryan’s record, he’s only lost twice, both to Americans – and one of those reached the Golden Gloves finals this year.
So with all the work he’s put in, he has a good chance.’
