The gallery will be included in a plan for the St Helier waterfront drawn up by architect Sir Michael Hopkins, which will be unveiled soon. Environment Minister Freddie Cohen announced this week that the much-mooted gallery, which will house local art and visiting collections, will be built on the site of the current bus station. ‘The present Weighbridge will be converted into a wonderful public area under plans now being finalised by Sir Michael and his team,’ said Senator Cohen. ‘This will be the first Hopkins-designed project in Jersey and it is hoped that the national gallery itself will be designed by Sir Michael. ‘Assuming that Route de la Libération is lowered, the Weighbridge site will lie at the apex of the two new waterfront boulevards and the site presently allocated for the gallery will be the visual focus of one boulevard.
