‘Car park sleeper ‘is sent to prison ‘to keep him alive’

Jean Pierre Le Roux (48), who was found lying in the Patriotic Street car park on Tuesday, yesterday admitted being drunk and incapable just a few days after being bound over for three months for a similar offence. Defence lawyer Pierre Landick told the court that Le Roux, of no fixed address, said that he always slept in the car park and did not understand why the police had arrested him on this occasion. But the Magistrate, Ian Le Marquand, replied: ‘Maybe someone wants to keep him alive.’ Le Roux, who the court heard was barred from staying at the Shelter when he was drunk, did not want help with his habitual drinking and maintained that he could stop if he wanted to, said Advocate Landick. He argued that prison was not there for treatment but as a penalty, and that it should not be used unless an offence merited it.
