Up to 500 sheltered homes for elderly people need to be built over the next 18 months to alleviate what the Housing Minister has labelled a desperate shortage.
He said that green zone sites, which have been protected from development, will have to be used because of the urgency and lack of space.
Senator Terry Le Main said he and Environment Minister Freddie Cohen have asked parish constables to identify green zone sites for sheltered homes for the elderly by the end of the year.
Senator Le Main said they expect the parishes to build some of the homes because there is no money available for capital projects.
‘It is a great concern to Housing,’ said the Senator, as he introduced his department’s Business Plan in the States yesterday.
‘We need to get some homes built by the end of next year and unfortunately there will have to be some built on green zone sites.’
