James Power (20) grabbed £183 from the till at Tickners Corner Store in St Mark’s Road while waving a 12-inch kitchen knife in the face of shopkeeper Daniel Oliveira.
Mr Oliveira was cut a number of times on his face and hands before he managed to beat off Power with a wooden broom.
Power then made off on a woman’s pink mountain bike.
Despite wearing a hooded top and a scarf over his face, police were able to track down Power with CCTV evidence and a number of witness statements.
