Gareth Hume , who was 25 yesterday, was already in jail for supplying heroin.

He was also awaiting a retrial for being an alleged runner in another case in 2004 involving up to £743,000 worth of drugs when he organised an operation involving heroin and ecstasy worth up to £643,000.

On this occasion, though, he was a prisoner at La Moye, where judge Sir Richard Tucker, QC, said that Hume had ‘brazenly and determinedly attempted to distribute drugs’.

‘Hume showed no remorse and absolutely no respect for the law,’ said Sir Richard.

Crown Advocate Julian Gollop, who sought a total of 20 years for Hume, said that not only did Hume use the illegal mobile phone to pass on instructions while behind bars, he also gained a visitor pass to the prison so that co-accused Steven Brookes (22) could visit him there and take instructions about what to do with the drugs.

Hume was arrested in prison after an officer grabbed the mobile phone from him.

Hume stood on the phone as well as the officer’s fingers and asked to be given the SIM card, which was refused.
