In his 2006 message, published today on page 4 with others from Island leaders, Sir Philip Bailhache says that when Islanders unite they can achieve great things, as demonstrated by the fact that over £2 million was raised as part of the global response to the Asian tsunami.
‘When we acknowledge ourselves as Jersey people, whatever our origins, and act collectively as a community, we are capable of great things,’ he said.
For Sir Philip, Jersey’s sense of identity is equally as important as the Island developing an international political personality, as was demonstrated for the world to see in two major events in 2004.
When the Island celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Liberation in May the mood was altogether different but the sense of identity and 800 years of loyalty to the Crown was even more to the fore.
‘For everyone the presence of the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh added a touch of Royal magic to the celebrations.
Again, our activities caught the imagination of the international media and were seen across the world,’ said Sir Philip.
