They certainly did it the hard way, progressing to the second round despite having to play their home tie in Southampton and trailing 1-0 with just four minutes of normal time remaining.

A late equaliser, followed by a barren extra period and penalty flicks did the trick though.

OVs started brightly, forcing a good save from ‘keeper Tony Collins after two minutes.

Throughout the early stages OVs – despite being on average over six years older than Penzance – looked fitter and stronger, especially down the right where Willie Sutton, Mike Tait and Mark Fullerton linked well.

Penzance playmaker Kirk Barlow, however, put the Cornish side ahead after 22 minutes, his short corner strike eluding the otherwise dependable Mike Labey.

OVs remained in control territorially but come half-time they still trailed.

On the restart Penzance slowly but surely stretched OVs although defenders Ian Taylor and Mattie Sutton dealt calmly with the increased threat.

Penzance went down to ten men for a spell, following a stick infraction, but OVs failed to make the advantage count.

Indeed, it was Labey who was forced into making several smart saves.

But with just minutes remaining, the tireless forward Nigel de Carteret was heavily tackled and a penalty stroke awarded.

Tim Herbert accepted the lifeline, converting low to the ‘keeper’s right.

In the time remainly OVs missed one more good chance but the final whistle heralded the search for a golden goal finish.

OVs dominated the first period and Penzance had a string of penalty corners in the second, but Labey and his defence held firm so it came down to penalty flicks.

Penzance’s total of two misses, one goal and a smart save by Labey, were surpassed by well-taken strokes from Richard Le Lièvre, Mike Tait and skipper Herbert.

OVs industry, guile and penalty stroke skills had won the day.
