Senator Philip Ozouf says the Island might be better off putting a simple park on the Talman/Gas Works site and putting a new car park nearby.

The Environment and Public Services Committee president says £15m earmarked for the Town Park in the States’s Car Park Trading Account could provide a multi-storey car park and leave funds left over.

His comments follow the announcement of plans by Deputy Rob Duhamel to create a trust to develop the park, taking it out of the hands of the States.

The only plan currently submitted is Andrew Le Quesne’s £30m proposal to develop the park using private money and to provide 1,400 parking spaces on three floors, underground.

Senator Ozouf says it would be crazy to make any decisions on the future of the park before the results of the contamination tests are complete at the start of next year.
